When did bike registration become mandatory for purchases from retailers ?

This requirement has been in place since January 1, 2021 for new bikes and July 1, 2021 for second-hand bikes sold by retailers. Owners of bikes purchased before these dates can still have them registered voluntarily.
To help prevent theft and make it easier to return lost or stolen bikes, all bicycles sold by a retailer must carry a unique identifier linked to the owner’s contact details. In addition to deterring theft, this system allows law enforcement equipped to access the national registry to contact the owner directly when a bike is recovered.
When buying a second-hand bike from a private seller, you can also check whether it has been reported stolen.

What does the law say ?

Why identify your bike ?

To increase the chances of getting it back if it’s recovered, ensure safe second-hand sales by avoiding stolen property and deter theft.

With bike registration, any recovered bike can be returned to its rightful owner. In France, about 300 000 bikes are stolen each year and around 100 000 are recovered by law enforcement. Without registration, most cannot be returned.
